What to do in case of a Flood?

Before:

• Prepare and/or review the family and community plan for floods.
• Do not use the traditional flood zones (riversides, streams) in order to locate settlements.
• Identify the evacuation routes and safe places free of floods in your community.
• Have ready food reserves, water and medicines.
• Always have ready copies of personal documents in plastic cases.
• Define mechanism to manipulate garbage and cleaning of drainage during rainy season.

 

During:

• If the flood is slow, take all safety precautions when evacuating your belongings.
• Disconnect every electric and gas switches.
• If the flood is suddenly, evacuate immediately taking with you your personal documents.
• Remain in a safe place. Do not cross rivers or flooded zones.
• Stay away from places where land slides can occur.
• Stay away from electric posts fallen in flooded areas.
• Collaborate with the cleaning and order if you are in a shelter.
• Pay attention to the recommendations of the emergency organizations.






After:

• Verify the conditions of your family and house.
• Facilitate the registry process and census of the affected persons.
• Evaluate the safety conditions of your surroundings and report the damages.
• Make sure that your house is in good conditions before you inhabit it.
• Avoid connecting electricity network until you make sure that there are not damages.
• Do not eat food that has been in contact with the flood water.
• If you live near streams, evacuate rapidly, due to existing danger of slides.
• Collaborate with the community labors: elimination and control of garbage, stagnant water and rumors.
• Collaborate in the rehabilitation and reconstruction.
