What to do in case of a volcano eruption?

Before:

• Identify if in your community there is a volcanic threat and try not to put yourself within its influence area.
• Cover the water storage to avoid contamination due to fallen ashes.
• Learn which is the most appropriate evacuation route and less exposed to the effects of the eruption and always go towards higher grounds.
• If you know of volcanic activity, place an adhesive tape in the windows because the shock waves can cause explosions.
• Keep animals away from areas near rivers and places where there could be possible landslides.
• Pay attention to the instructions given by the authorities and follow the recommendations.

During:

• Even if the eruption seems calm, do not go near the volcano.
• The wind can drag hot vapors and there is the possibility that solid products can be suddenly thrown.
• Look for shelter under a roof, if you do not find one, try to breath through a damp clothe of water or vinegar, this avoids the passing of gases and volcanic dust.
• Protect your eyes closing them as much as possible.
• If the authorities decide to establish the evacuation, take your family luggage that you had already prepared (warm clothes, documentation and personal medicines) limiting the luggage to what can be transported by hand by each person.
• If you are caught by clouds’ gases, protect yourself with a damp clothe of water or vinegar.
• Avoid hollows, where noxious fumes can accumulate, including after the eruption has ended.
• Disconnect the electric power and turn off the water and gas valves.
• Use the telephone as little as possible and securely close the housing when leaving the same.
• Look for the protection of high grounds and do not stay near rivers or streams.
• Pay attention to the water stream and to the material you transport before crossing a bridge.
• If you know of a landslide that is holding back a river, immediately inform your neighbors and the authorities.

After:

• Remain in a safe place until the authorities inform about the measures that should be followed.
• Keep in mind the effect that the accumulation of volcanic material causes over the roofs, where the weight can increase if mixed with water (possible collapse).
